Reverse shows naval battle scene with legend: "HOSTIVM NAVIBVS CAPTIS AVT FVGATIS" and inscription below exergual line: "AD ORAM SCOTIAE XXIII SEPT./MDCCLXXVIIII."

The first order of American-struck bronze medals of John Paul Jones came on June 7, 1863, when U.S. Mint Director Pollock requested twenty-five to be made. When the dies were made in 1863, the artist's name (Dupre) was left out, as in this example.
