This rouge is part of a traveling makeup kit belonging to Gertrude Kellogg, a prominent actress on the New York stage. She made her debut in 1870 and played opposite such actors as Edwin Forrest. At the peak of her career in 1888 she played the role of the Queen in "Hamlet." Ms. Kellogg's diaries are in the Historical Society library. Her diary entry for August 22, 1887 mentions the purchase of a makeup box for $13.50.
