This portrait of William Jefferson “Bill” Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States was presumably conceived as cover art or as an illustration for an issue of TIME Magazine, but never appeared in the magazine. The portrait was probably intended to commemorate Clinton’s re-election in 1996.

Donizetti depicts the then fifty-year old politician clad in what appears to be a black jurist’s robe. Over the course of his career, Donizetti developed a reputation as a realist figure painter, and was credited for the technical precision of his work and for the timeless quality of his finished canvases. He received acclaim for portraits of international figures, most prominently for a portrait of Pope John Paul II, which was published on the cover of TIME Magazine on February 4, 1985.
