The Equal Rights Amendment was a proposed amendment to the United States Constitution which would have guaranteed equal rights to women. It passed both houses of Congress in 1972, but required ratifcation by thirty-eight states in order to become law. Despite delaying the deadline for ratification from 1979 to 1982 the amendment failed.
