Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC), a national, non-profit organization, was founded in 1981 with a mission "to reduce the spread of HIV disease, help people with HIV maintain and improve their health and independence, and keep the prevention, treatment and cure of HIV an urgent national and local priority. In fulfilling this mission, we will remain true to our heritage by fighting homophobia and affirming the individual dignity of all gay men and lesbians." The organization created a wide range of items, such as pin-back buttons and informational materials, to spread awareness on safer sex practices in the face of the rising death toll from AIDS in the gay community in the 1980s and 1990s.
