Description: Gold struck medal issued by the New-York Historical Society for achievement in history; obverse with allegorical figure of history and legend "THE NEW YORK HISTORICAL SOCIETY"; reverse with open book and legend "FOR / ACHIEVEMENT / IN HISTORY"; engraved "1942" above book and "GEORGE CLINTON DENSMORE ODELL" at bottom; beaded border. Original fitted leather-covered box engraved "George C.D. Odell" on cover.

This medal was awarded to historian George C. D. Odell (1866-1949) for his 15-volume work "Annals of the New York Stage." The award for achievement in history was inaugurated in 1925 and awarded to such distinguished historians as Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes, Wilberforce Eames, DeWitt M. Lockman, Harry T. Peters, and Allan Nevins.
