Description: Copper-plated lead electrotype of medal awarded by Congress to John Stewart in 1779; inscribed on obverse: "JOANNI STEWART COHORTIS PRAEFECTO" and "COMITIA AMERICANA" with depiction of Indian Queen presenting palm branch to Major Stewart; reverse inscribed: "STONEY-POINT OPPUGNATUM" and XV JUL. MDCCLXXIX" with image of assault at Stony Point.

This is an electrotype of one of the "Comitia Americana" medals awarded by Congress to heroes of the Revolutionary War between 1776 and 1781. Major John Stewart was honored by Congress in 1779 but the medal was not struck until late 1789 or early 1790.
