Heade spent a portion of his career painting still lifes of Northern flora. Red and White Rosebuds on a Branch presents two intertwined roses against a dark background. By the 1870s, Heade had further simplified his technique, positioning the flowers against a monochromatic or neutral backdrop to accentuate their color and texture.
