The subject was the second daughter of William Douglas Sloane and Emily Thorn (Vanderbilt) Sloane of New York. She was a great-granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt. She married John Henry Hammond (d. 1949), a lawyer, banker, and corporation director, in 1899. Mrs. Hammond was for many years president of the Women's Roosevelt Memorial Association which restored the birthplace of Theodore Roosevelt on East 20th Street. In 1914 she was a founder of the Parents League of New York.
