Helen Clark Bulkley was the daughter of Edward H. and Catherine (Clark) Bulkley and the granddaughter of R. Smith Clark, a successful New York businessman of the early 1800s. On September 16, 1880, she was married in Calvary Church to Roland Redmond (d. 1894), a member of a prominent New York merchant-banker family. This miniature was probably painted from a photograph of the subject in a costume she wore to a masquerade ball.
