In this pendant to the William and Abraham Beekman House, Grube depicted the expansive view from the Beekman home across the East River to Blackwell's Island, today called Roosevelt Island. Commissioned paintings such as this reflect an old-fashioned topographical tradition and served not only as permanent records for future generations, but also as celebrations of the wealth and culture that an impressive family property suggested.
