Melza Wood WinthropAmerican, 1875 – 1928

Melza Riggs Wood was the daughter of John Dunn Wood, of New York. Miss Wood married Beekman Winthrop, a lawyer and banker. The couple lived in Washington when he was the private secretary to President William Howard Taft, then head of the Phillipine commission. Mrs. Winthrop served as first lady of Puerto Rico, when her husband was governor (1904-1907).
