Matthew Boulton with his business partner John Fothergill (1730–1782) opened the Soho Manufactury, an early factory in Birmingham, England. Among their, products were items decorated with ormolu. Boulton subsequently partnered with inventor and mechanical engineer, James Watt (1736–1819), who had designed a steam engine with a separate condensor. In 1788 Boulton opened the Soho mint and mass produced coins with steam-engine driven presses.
