A native of Brooklyn, DeWitt Lockman, portrayed here as a child, was a well-known portrait painter in the 1920s and 30s. He was a student of James Beard at the National Academy of Design in the early 1890s, and a trustee of The New-York Historical Society from 1929 to 1957.
