Béatrice Coron’s Hi Five! Stories from the Five Boroughs is a whimsical series of hand-cut Tyvek cityscapes describing the five boroughs of New York City. Each borough bursts with its unique landmarks: Manhattan showcases Broadway, the United Nations, MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the New-York Historical Society; Brooklyn features the Brooklyn Museum, Coney Island, Brighton Beach, and Prospect Park; Bronx includes the Edgar Allan Poe House, Yankee Stadium, Van Cortland Manor, and New York Botanical Garden; Queens portrays the Queensborough Bridge, Noguchi Museum, MoMA PS1, Citi Field, and JFK Airport; and Staten Island pictures the Staten Island Ferry, Snug Harbor gardens, Sri Lankan Museum, Verrrazano Bridge, and Fort Wadsworth. Originally from France, Coron studied art at the École des Beaux-Arts and Mandarin at the Université of Lyon III. Before settling in New York City in 1984, she worked in tourism and lived in Egypt, Mexico, and Taiwan, where her early interest in cut-paper art flourished. An internationally recognized artist, Coron has exhibited widely in France and the United States. Her paper cut-outs range in size from miniatures to environmental installations. She has created wearable cut-paper pieces as well as cut-paper artist books and has translated her hand-cut paperwork into more permanent materials for public art projects in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
