This stole belonged to Helen Phelps Stokes (Mrs. James Stokes) of New York City. Her husband was a merchant, banker, and a large real estate owner; he was the founder of the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, and the first treasurer of the board of trustees of the YMCA.
