This Masonic apron belonged to Captain John Shethar of the Second Continental Dragoons, Connecticut, during the American Revolution.
DescriptionSilk painted Masonic apron inscribed across the top in gold, "ARCANUM" with images of the sun and moon, two columns and Masonic motifs painted in red, grey, gold, and brown below on a white ground; blue silk trim border and lace trim around top.
Markingspainted: across top: "ARCANUM" painted: on banner: "ARMOR/ HONER ET/ JUSTIA" painted: in center: "Behold how/ good and/ how/ pleasent/ it is for/ Brethern/ to dwell/ to gether/ in unity/ it is like the/ precious/ ointment/ upon/ the head/ that ran/ down upon/ the bard/ even/ Aron/ bard/ that went/ down to/ the skirts of/ his garments"
