John B. Anderson (b. 1922) a Republican Congressman from Illinois, ran in the 1980 Republican primaries for President. When it became clear that he could not win his party's nomination, he mounted a campaign as an Independent. After demonstrating some initial popularity he was not able to carry a single precinct in the country.
