This award medal is named after the founder of the College of the City of New York, Townsend Harris. After being elected president of the New York City Board of Education in 1846, Harris saw that a "free" college was established in New York City in order to make higher education accessible to the masses. The Townsend Harris Award Medal is given annually to alumni exhibiting outstanding leadership in their communities.

Reverse bears inscription within central roundel: "FOR NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT"; legend around border: "THE ASSOCIATE ALUMNI OF THE COLLEGE OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK." Square cream-colored cardboard case.
