This medal is one of a series of three medals issued by the American Art Union that honored prominent artists. The others were John Trumbull and Washington Allston.
DescriptionBronze struck medal with obverse showing nude bust of Stuart facing left with legend: "GILBERT STUART." Reverse depicts female figure presenting laurel wreath to artist with sculptor awaiting his turn; legend: "AMERICAN ART-UNION."; date below "1848", all within beaded border.
