This medal is one of a series of three medals issued by the American Art Union that honored prominent artists. The others were John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart.
DescriptionBronze struck medal with obverse showing nude bust of Allston facing right with legend: "WASHINGTON ALLSTON." Reverse depicts female figure presenting laurel wreath to artist with sculptor awaiting his turn; legend: "AMERICAN ART-UNION."; date below "1847", all within beaded border.
MarkingsInscription: obverse, at lower left of field: "P.P.DUGGAN DEL." Inscription: obverse, at lower right of field: "C.C.WRIGHT SC." Inscription: reverse, at lower center of image, on second step: "P.P.DUGGAN DEL." Inscription: reverse, at lower right of field, on first step: "C.C.WRIGHT SC."
