Eugene McCarthy ran for president on a platform promising an end to the war in Vietnam, but when he failed to gain the nomination at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago, his anti-war supporters were left without a candidate (both Humphrey and Nixon supported the war effort). Humphrey tried desperately to enlist doves, including former McCarthy supporters, to help him defeat Richard Nixon, but lost in a close race. Many attribute Humphrey's loss to the lack of turnout by McCarthy supporters.
