The United Farmworkers Union, headed by Cesar Chavez, organized many protests and boycotts against non-union, or "scab," produce. The boycotts focused chiefly on lettuce and grapes. Conscious consumers were encouragedto boycott suppermarket chain, such as Lucky and Safeway, which carried scab produce, and truck unloaded often refused to unload scab produce.
