David N. Dinkins was the first black mayor of New York City. He was a Democratic member of New York state assembly in 1966, and delegate to Democratic National Convention from New York in 1980, 1996, and 2000. He also served as borough president of Manhattan, New York from 1986 to 1989, before he was elected mayor of New York City in 1990. He served one term as mayor.
