The reverse of this medal bears a diebreak at the bottom, which indicates that it was struck prior to 1881 (a medal in the collection of John Ford, Jr., struck before 1881, has the same sign of breakage at the bottom of the reverse).
DescriptionBronze struck medal with obverse showing uniformed bust of Stephen Decatur, Jr. facing right, with legend: "STEPHANUS DECATUR NAVARCHUS. PUGNIS PLURIBUS, VICTOR." Reverse shows naval battle with legend above: "OCCIDIT SIGNUM HOSTILE SIDERA SURGUNT"; inscription in exergue: "INTER STA.UNI. NAV. AMERI./ET MACEDO.NAV.ANG.DIE/XXV OCTOBRIS/MDCCCXII."
