Gift of Candace Lee Williams, Danbury, Conn., Age 20, High Honor Student Northeastern University, Boston, MA
2003.39.1
Candace Lee Williams, a 20-year-old student at Northeastern University, was one of 81 passengers on American Airlines Flight 11 which hijackers crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11th. Coincidentally, Candance had just finished a semester's internship in one of the twin towers for Merrill Lynch's Equity Trading Support Group and was hoping to squeeze in a quick trip to California before her classes started. Candace's grandparents, Charles and Janice Williams, contacted the New-York Historical Society after reading about the "History Responds" collecting initiative and asked the Society to preserve one of the many dolls Candace had enjoyed collecting ever since she was a child. This blonde, blue-eyed porcelain Alice in Wonderland doll was selected by her grandmother for its striking resemblance to Candace as a school girl. Her grandparents also donated the blue and white tassel from her 1999 high school mortar board (2003.39.2), the program printed for Candace's memorial service (2003.39.3), copies of correspondence from Northeastern about her posthumous place on the Dean's List and the foundation of a Candace Williams Scholarship Fund, and photographs of Candace.
