Bella Abzug was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1970, representing the Upper West Side. She later ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate and for mayor. Abzug's career was brief but colorful: she was known for her unabashed liberalism and feminism, and for her trademark wide-brimmed hat.
