By the time of his retirement in 1965 from the New York City Police Department, Mario Biaggi (b. 1917) was the most decorated police officer in New York City history. He served as a U.S. Representative from 1968 to 1983. In 1973 he ran for New York City mayor, losing to Abraham D. Beame.
