The subject, identified only as "Mr. Wheelock" when the portrait was presented to the Society, is believed to be the oldest of nine children of Eli Wheelock and Hepsibah (Osgood) Wheelock of Calais, Vermont. The family moved to Massachusetts shortly after the subject's birth and ultimately to Boston where the elder Wheelock became connected with the old Quincy House hotel. Young Wheelock studied painting and architecture and worked in both fields in Boston from 1853 until his death.
