The subject, daughter of John Dunn Wood of New York, was married to Beekman Winthrop, a lawyer and banker, on October 7, 1903. Her husband became private secretary to President William Howard Taft in 1900 when the latter was head of the Philippine Commission. From 1904 to 1907 Winthrop was governor of Puerto Rico and held high administrative posts in Washington until 1914 when he became a partner of the banking firm of Robert Winthrop and Company.
