Wilson, the 28th president of the United States, was elected in 1912 and served for two terms. He attempted to maintain neutrality as Europe erupted into World War I, but in 1917 America entered the war. After the victory of the Allies Wilson advocated a League of Nations for Europe in which the U.S. would play a leading role; Senator Henry Cabot Lodge of Massachusetts, however, persuaded the Senate to vote against participation. Wilson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919.
