The subject was the second son of Gulian and Mary (Crommelin) Verplanck. A member of the first class of King's (Columbia) College, he graduated in 1758. He learned the banking business from his uncle, David Crommelin, in Amsterdam, then returned to New York to become a leader in the business life of the city. He was one of the twenty-four founders of the New York Chamber of Commerce in 1768. This portrait is based on an original painted by John Singleton Copley in New York in 1771.
