The subject was born in New York, the son of Lewis Atterbury Stimson and Candace (Wheeler) Stimson. After graduating from Yale (1888) he attended Harvard law school and was admitted to the New York bar. He began his practice in New York in 1893 and soon thereafter became interested in politics. He served as secretary of war under President Taft and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and as secretary of state under President Hoover.
