The subject, the youngest son of Samuel Seabury (1729-96), the first bishop of the Episcopal Church in America, and Mary (Hicks) Seabury, was born in West Chester, New York. He was ordained a deacon by his father in 1793 and a priest in 1799. He was rector of St. James's Church in New London until 1814, and of Caroline Church in Setauket, Long Island, from 1814 until his death. The subject's second son, Charles Saltonstall Seabury, was married to the artist's sister, Ruth Hawkins Mount.
