Major John Rivington (ca. 1772-1808)

ca. 1805
Watercolor on ivory
Overall: 2 3/4 x 2 3/8 in. ( 7 x 6 cm )
Gift of Mrs. Augustus Van Horne Ellis
1940.17
John, the son of James Rivington and Elizabeth (Van Horne) Rivington, received a commission in the British army from Sir Guy Carleton, the last commander of the royal forces to occupy New York. In this miniature he appears in his military uniform and looks to be about thirty years of age. Since he was living in England by 1805 the portrait is probably by a British artist.
