The ability to cut silhouettes proficiently became an admired skill in polite society. John André—the notorious British Army officer hanged as a spy by the Continental Army during the American Revolution—was no exception. He was a great favorite in colonial society in both Philadelphia and New York during the British occupation. André could draw, paint, and cut silhouettes, as well as sing. A prolific writer, he was also fluent in multiple languages.
His subject, Phineas Bond, was a Philadelphia lawyer and an avowed Loyalist. Bond eventually sought asylum in England, where he became a legal advisor to British merchants. He later returned, serving as British consul at Philadelphia.
