The subject was born in New York, the daughter of Francis and Elisabeth (McCoun) Marbury. Her interests ranged from literary clubs to welfare work and from the theater to women's suffrage. She was the literary agent for a number of French authors and playwrights and for George Bernard Shaw, and the author of several books herself, among them an autobiography, "My Crystal Ball" (1923).
