The subject grew up in Aberdeen, Scotland, and after studying art there went to London where he received instruction from Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. Invited to America by Dr. John Kemp of Columbia College, he arrived in 1791; a year later he was joined by his brother Alexander, also an artist, and together they operated the Columbian Academy of Painting, one of the earliest art schools in America.
