About 1835 Luman Reed commissioned Asher B. Durand to paint two sets of portraits of the first seven presidents of the United States. One set was immediately given to the Museum and Library of the Brooklyn Navy Yard; after Reed's death his own set went to the New-York Gallery of Fine Arts and then to the New-York Historical Society.
