This painting is based on a much larger portrait of British General John Burgoyne executed by Allan Ramsay in Rome in 1756. The smaller version may have been used as the basis of an engraving that forms the frontispiece of Edward Barrington De Fonblanque's "Political and Military Episodes in the Latter Half of the Eighteenth Century, Derived from the Life and Correspondence of the Right Hon. John Burgoyne, General, Statesman, Dramatist" (1876).
