John Watts De Peyster was the son of Frederic De Peyster from whom he inherited large tracts of land in New York City. He joined the New York militia in 1845 and eventually rose to the rank of brigadier general, was active in the organization of the New York City police and fire departments and authored several books, including "Personal and Military History of Philip Kearny" (1869) and "Napoleone di Buonaparte" (1896). This portrait was a gift to the Society from his granddaughter.
