U.S. Navy officer Stephen Decatur was famous for his daring and bravery in battle. Probably his most celebrated victory, which came in the War of 1812 when he commanded the "United States," was his capture of the British frigate "Macedonian." This portrait of Decatur was obtained by the donor from the Peale Museum in Philadelphia when that institution closed.
