Day rose from office boy in a wholesale dry goods firm to one of the nation's leading insurance brokers by the time he was thirty. Joseph P. Day, Inc., of New York, also dealt in real estate, mortgage loans, and appraisals and auctions of properties. Day negotiated many of the largest real estate transactions in New York in the 1920s. He was on the board of directors of several large corporations and on the real estate committee of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.
