This serving spoon was given to the donor's mother, Marie Antoinette Baker Davis, on the occasion of her marriage to Fellows Davis, October 17, 1871. Egyptian motifs became popular after the French and Egyptian governments joined in the formal opening of th Suez Canal in 1869. The Gorham company introduced the "Isis" pattern in the same year.
DescriptionSilver serving spoon in "Isis" pattern with a rectangular, box-shaped handle with a conical finial, a conical joint with a beaded band and the engraved initials, "MAB" superimposed; cylindrical stem forked and scrolled at the bowl; elliptical bowl with a groove through the center and applied "Egyptian" style wings and an asp at the handle joint; makers' marks stamped on the underside of the stem.
