According to accession records, these spurs were taken from the boots of a Confederate officer at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House on May 21, 1864.
DescriptionBrass and iron pair of spurs; U-shaped brass spurs with rectangular slots for strap at top, and serrated, star-shaped iron wheel rod-fastened to curved foot at bottom; stamped mark on top exterior.
Markingsstamped: exterior: "OAKES" (a Frederick Oakes was listed as a watchmaker and military goods dealer in Hartford, CT c. 1838-1851)
