Crazy quilts (or "Japanese" patchwork) became popular with the Japonisme movement in decorative arts during the 1870's. Japanese and Japanese-inspired objects were highlighted at the Philadelphia Exhibition in 1876 during the expansion in trade by Western countries with the East.
DescriptionCrazy quilt patchwork square centering an Abraham Lincoln commemorative mourning ribbon; consisting of random patches of silk brocades, taffetas and velvets sewn together in mulitcolored threads by herringbone, lazy daisy, straight and buttonhole stitches; lined with white cotton.
Markingsprinted: center, on ribbon: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN / THE MARTYR PRESIDENT / OF / OUR COUNTRY"
