The leaded glass shades at Tiffany Studios shared many of the same designs with the firm's windows. This gourd shade recalls windows made over two decades earlier for the George Kemp House in New York City and for Tiffany's own home at the Bella Apartments. The Root base was one of Tiffany Studios' successful Art Nouveau designs.
DescriptionLeaded glass and bronze Gourd table lampshade; 24-inch diameter shade depicting gourd plant shown on a trellis in three design repeats; trellis supports rendered in orange glass; small flowers rendered in milky opaque glass, and leaves various shades of mottled green; gourds rendered in undulating yellow, white and orange glass with irregular speckles; background is blue streaked with green and purple. Shown with adjustable bronze Root base (N84.102.2) and cap (N84.105.3).
Markingsstamped on metal tag inside shade: "TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK 1522-1"
