According to the accession records, this cap belonged to the donor's father, David P. Davis, who served from 1861 to 1863 as a private in the 5th New York Volunteer Infantry, commonly called "Duryee's Zouaves" or the "Red-Legged Devils." He must have acquired the cap sometime after the Civil War, however, as the maker is not listed at the address indicated on the label until 1870.
Description"Chasseur pattern" dark blue wool felt cap; black patent leather visor which is flat and somewhat rectangular; soft crown with circular, countersunk top; embroidered front insignia with number "3" framed by branches of laurel; chin strap made of knotted gold cord secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with monogram "GAR"; black textile lining.Markingsembroidered: on front of cap: "3"
