According to the accession records, this hat belonged either to the donor or to his father, Thomas Henry Barber (1844-1905), both of whom served in the National Guard New York. This type of cap was introduced in 1895, and the embroidered eagle was worn by all officers.

DescriptionDress hat with soft, cylindrical, dark blue wool felt crown with same color band around base, and black leather visor; shield-breasted eagle embroidered on front; cord chin strap with two slides, secured at either side by a gilded metal button embossed with shield-breasted eagle (shield with "I" in relief); brown leather sweatband and black satin lining.
