This forage cap was probably worn by a member of a militia unit rather than a soldier in the regular army (see comments of William L. Brown, Accessioned Object Files, N-YHS).
DescriptionFolding green morocco leather forage cap with rounded visor with black patent leather on upper side; crown composed of back panel, two crescent-shaped top panels, and front panel with serpentine inset, all with edges trimmed with piping; back flap (folded up) with a button hole in each corner (probably used to attach a band of fur for extra warmth in winter); black leather sweatband with band of black silk stitched to upper edge; white cotton lining.
Markingsprinted: on lining: MOROCCO, CLOTH, AND FUR CAP / MANUFACTORY / LUKE DAVIES / 102 William Street / NEW YORK" handwritten in ink: on lining: "William E. Curtis"
